Save money on your energy by using your heating and appliances more efficiently
You don’t have to invest a lot of money to improve your home and save money. Simply follow our advice, tips and see the savings on your energy bills. There are a few areas in the house where you can save money today.
In the kitchen
If you only boil a kettle for one or two cups instead of filling it to the top every time. That could save you around £7 a year.
Covering your pan with a lid while cooking will save you both time and money
Count every wash! Make sure your washing machine is full and use the quick cycle or ECO mode program and save yourself around £5 on electricity and a further £8 on water.
Try not to use a tumble dryer if you don’t need to and if possible dry your clothes outside to avoid damp and mould growth.
Heating system
Make sure that you have efficiency heating controls, such as a programmer or room thermostat to control your room temperature. Don’t waste money by heating rooms which are not occupied.
Keep your house temperature between 18-24 degrees.
Turning your thermostat down by 1 degree can save you around £85-£90 a year.
Close your curtains during the night to avoid draughts coming in, but keep them open on sunny days and use solar power to heat your home. But don’t cover radiators!
Close internal doors to keep the heat inside the rooms.
Check for draughts around the windows and front doors and seek advice on how to insulate them effectively.
Other advice
Spend less time in your shower. Cut your shower time to 7 minutes will save you money. If everyone in a four-person family did this it would lead to a total saving of £80 a year.
Turn the lights off if you don’t need them. This could save you around £14 a year.
Turn your appliances off standby mode. An appliance on standby, uses almost as much energy as one that is on.
Change your old fluorescent bulbs to more efficient LED lighting. They are 20% more efficient and last longer. If the average household replaced all of their bulbs with LEDs, it would cost about £100 and save about £35 a year on bills.
